ETCHING

The Grafische Werkplaats has:

  • A Roco etching press with a width of 90 cm
  • A Roco etching press with a width of 120 cm

All elementary facilities for printing from etching plates are available such as work tables, heating elements, dust boxes and drying racks. The largest acid tray measures 80 x 110 cm.

We also have workshops and facilities for non-toxic printing techniques like photopolymer etching. You can further refine your printing results using chine collé.

RELIEF PRINTING

The Grafische Werkplaats has:

  • A Roco etching press with a width of 90 cm
  • A Roco etching press with a width of 120 cm

Both are height adjustable and perfectly suitable for relief printing.

LITHOGRAPHY

The Grafische Werkplaats has two lithography presses:

  • A Van Ginkel hydraulic lithography press, width 80 cm;
  • A Mansveld semi-automatic lithography press with a width of 114 cm.

All elementary facilities for preparing and printing from the stones are available in-house. There are lithographic stones of various sizes and, of course, lithography carts. The largest stone has a surface measurement of 80 x 108 cm.

The Grafische Werkplaats is the right place for specialised knowledge of lithography. You can follow a workshop or course if you want to learn lithography or refresh your knowledge of the technique.

SCREEN PRINTING

There are facilities for screen printing on paper and fabric at the Werkplaats.

The Werkplaats has two vacuum exposure units and Akticop lighting equipment for exposing screen printing screens. There are also two rinse cabins available.

There is a textile printing table (440 x 140 cm) with a rail for printing per metre. There are three Viprotech printing tables for paper; two with surfaces measuring 90 x 105 cm and a semi-automatic table with a surface of 140 x 190 cm and a squeegee with guiding rail. There are also two Martin printing tables, each with a work surface measuring 120 x 170 cm. The largest format screens that can be lit have an outer measurement of 108 x 148 cm.

We have screens in various formats with various mesh types for both paper and textile available for rent. You can of course also bring your own screens. The Werkplaats has squeegees in various formats. Light sensitive emulsion and the corresponding emulsion remover can be purchased at the Werkplaats.

The Werkplaats staff can tell you everything you need to know about screen printing on alternative carriers like wood and plastic, screen printing on ceramic transfers and effect inks for textile prints.

Throughout the year you can follow workshops on screen printing on paper and textiles. If you are interested, look at the available options within the regular course programme.

TEXTILE PRINTING

The Grafische Werkplaats is the only graphic studio in the Netherlands with facilities for printing textile by the metre. The textile table has a work surface of 440 x 140 cm (max. printing format is 120 cm x 400 cm), with a system for printing per metre. You can also work with individual screens and smaller pieces of textile on this textile table.

If you don’t have your own printing screen, they are available for rent. The available sizes have outer measurements of:

  • 140 x 100 cm
  • 130 x 100 cm
  • 113 x 98 cm
  • 98 x 73 cm

These textile screens are covered with either 43T or 48T mesh. Please indicate well in advance which screen you want to rent so we can reserve it for you.

Besides facilities for printing by the metre, the Werkplaats also has a pneumatic transfer press with a work surface of 50 x 40 cm. This transfer press can be used for transfers on flat materials, for printing with sublime inks and also for insets for fixing small textiles.

We have also a t-shirtcarrousel and a flashdryer.

RISOGRAPHY

The Grafische Werkplaats has two Risographs: digital stencil machines on which you can make your own prints, creatively and easily and at a low cost. They are simple to use and the results are quirky and unconventional. Watch the film above to get an impression of the process and be surprised by the results.

If you want to work with the Risographs, please keep in mind you can’t connect them to a computer. So bring a print, drawing or other image. If you will be working on the Risograph for the first time, please make appointment on Wednesday or Friday.

Printing and material specifications for the Risograph:

  • 80 to 210 gram paper
  • A4 format
  • Print colours: red, blue, black, brown and green.

DIGITAL PRINTING

Our A1-printer, the Epson Stylus Pro 7880, has a roll width of 61 cm. You can print silkscreen films with this printer. It may only be operated by the supervisors.

EDELE PROCEDÉS

There are two vacuum exposure tables for edele procedés, a vacuum exposure table, an exposure lamp and rinse units in both the etching room and in the darkroom. You can prepare and develop light-sensitive paper in the darkroom. Bring your own paper, chemicals and inks.

The dimensions of the vacuum exposure tables:

  • One with a maximum outer size of 150 x 180 cm
  • One with a maximum outer size of 80 x 100 cm.

You can use both for techniques based on light-sensitive materials, like photogravure, gum printing and photopolymer etching.

DARKROOM

In our darkroom we have:

  • A Durst Laborator enlarger suitable for negatives with a sizes from 6 x 6 cm to 13 x 18 cm
  • A 6 x 9 cm enlarger
  • A Durst 6 x 6 enlarger
  • A Durst mini enlarger

There is also a developing table with two rinsing trays each measuring 100 x 125 cm.

Please inform us in advance if you are planning on working in the darkroom with regards to purchasing the chemicals.
